So the axle wasn't broken. The bolt attaching the hub to the axle sheared. It was making a pretty obnoxious squeaking sound, which I thought was brakes. This is what I found. I welded up the elongated hole, drilled it out and put it back together. It runs much better now that I don't have to hold down the differential lock all the time.

Welcome to OCC and thanks for sharing your rare Cub with us. The lakefront shot looks like something from a dealer's sales brochure. Beautiful pic!

Thanks for the kind words. We're very luck to live on beautiful Cayuga Lake in Upstate NY

Here's the newest tweak. I bought a $40 Wheel Horse plow on Craigslist. The winch is set up with a Receiver hitch so I can also use it for my car trailer as well

Since I think there are only a few of these left on earth I like to update this thread when I do upgrades. My latest tweak is a comet 94C drive clutch and a 90D driven clutch. The difference is night and day. The 40 Series clutch that it came with is either on or off, jerking like hell taking off, with no smooth transition. The 94C is smooth and uses a 1-3/16” belt as apposed to the 40 series 7/8” belt. It did require a little cutting to clearance things but nothing too difficult.

I know there isn’t much interest in these things but it’s been an easy to work on and reliable side by side for me for quite a few years now.

A tribute of your ability to keep the ol' girl running.
Some people like old things and like to keep them running.
just like us, that keep our cubs running.

A couple pics of the new clutch system. I had to notch the lower frame and cut a hole in the motor cover plate. I welded a drop section into the frame where I cut it. I also had to trim a little around the rear brake mounts to get the larger 90D driven unit in.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
