Default Just picked up 2072

New to me 2072, picked it up from the original owner since 1987. Right around 900 hours on the working meter. Included was 60" deck (very clean and quiet), front blade original to the tractor, barely used with original paint and 75lbs wheel weights. He also provided me with the original bill of sale, owners manual and attachments booklet.

Overall its in great shape for being 30 years old starts right up and runs great, little dings, dents and poorly done touch ups over the years, oil leak somewhere towards the top of the motor. Back of the motor is dry but under the intake has some pooling which is obviously running down to the mount plate. Ill have to tear it down to get a better look unless someone has a good idea where to start.

Now, I don't know enough about the Onans and Kohlers to know which this is equipped with. I am aware the Onan is pretty rare for a 2072 and based on my research I'm getting conflicting information. Based on my serial number I believe it should have a Onan but others have said the Onan uses a twin muffler, mine only has one which would mean Kohler. :big think:

Attached is pictures of the serial and mfg date along with how the stable is looking now with the new addition. Ill attach more pictures later on when I have time.

Thanks for any help provided.

A pic of the engine would clear up what engine you have. Congrats on the new Cub.

***Update***
Another mysterious onan powered 2072 has been found.
I had to go out and dig further, the anticipation was killing me. It does indeed have two mufflers I just didn't look close enough when I was first going over it.

Didn't get into that oil leak though lol. I attached a bad picture of right under the intake box for reference.

Cool tractor, when you get a chance check the mufflers. See if they have IH stamped in them yet. I’m just curious, cause 982s with Onans did.

Put a few hours on her today, everything went well. Prior to doing anything I brake cleaned and dried off anything I could get to without pulling any shields off the motor. Kept a close eye on everything as I went along. No new oil pooling or dripping, when I was looking it over the P.O. said “make sure you screw on the dip stick tight” which leads me to believe he left it loose at some point and oil probably shot all over. Maybe I’m just seeing residual from something like that. I’ll continue to use it and monitor the situation.

I don’t see any IH stamps in the front of the mufflers. If or when I disassemble I’ll take a look at the back sides.

Never pay full price... older gentleman was ready to move it. Now I’m im not saying it was the cheapest cub out there but it was fair to me for what was included and the fact that it was original owner.

Hi Ryan....this is Dave with the other 2072 for sale. I'm glad u found this site. I'm not at all familiar with the Onan engine so I can't speak as to common oil leaks like the kohlers. One other issue with that style tractor is the rear end becoming loose from the frame. Not sure if u have heard of this or not. Check the bolts on the frame rails (back by the battery) that go through the frame and into the rear end. Make sure they r to spec and not loose and causing damage. Also... don't just crank on them with a heavy wrench as if u do you will make your problem worse. Do some research on torque specs before touching. Looks nice and good luck.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
