Default mowing 101

So these are the kinds of questions that keep me up at night...

We're mowing a large (~2 acre) rectangle with no obstacles. Currently am using a LTX 1042 KW. (42" deck) We normally cut counter-clockwise to throw the clipping to the outside of the loop.

When I mow, I get to the point where at each corner, I stop and back up, then continue onto the next side of the lawn. My wife just turns the steering wheel and makes the hard 90 deg. turn. She does leave some narrow uncut swaths, but not consistently.

So is it possible, depending on your tractor, that you could always cut without backing up and never have these uncut areas on your corners? Is a wide deck and/or a tight turning radius the key factors?

It's a slow day...

LMAO....I have a hydro, and don't back up. I cut rectangles and after a few rounds, then I just dead head around the ends. Much faster...but that is the way I do it.

Is reverse broken? Why no backing up?

I think his wife doesn't stop and back up because it's quicker to keep going forward

Unless I'm doing a small yard, I do it like a farmer picks corn; I do several passes around the outside then go back and forth (or diagonal).

I do know what you mean about going around 90° corners, though. Just watch your outside deck cutting edge and keep it on the uncut grass and unless you're almost done, it usually comes out alright.

I do the first two outside rounds, then back and forth with the 2372 Hydro. If I want to play with the 122 gear shift tractor, then I start out the same, but when the corners get to sharp, I make a loop at the corners.
Going down a side, and when I get to the end, go past the corner and turn towards the outside, make a loop then keep going...
Excuse the drawing.

I lay off lands, like when you plow. But it's back on forth whichever direction I mow. Never the same way back to back.

Is is possible to turn at the corners and not leave grass or make it look good..... NO. Decks are meant to have grass fed into them straight. When you turn and cut, it lays the grass over and doesn't cut well between where the blades meet. If you want a nice looking cut, square corners.... and if I were you, I'd just mow the grass myself. My wife helps occasionally..... following me with a second tractor doing exactly what I do.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
