CH's have self adjusting hyd lifters. My guess is it got hot stuck a valve and bent the push rods.

Now is the 1864 worth saving HELL YEAH! Best Cub GT ever built. Even if you have to put a new bullet in it. Just did that with the one I have. Replaced the CH18 with a CH22

Sam that's what my thought was. I will however respectfully disagree that the 1864 was the best GT ever built. I really enjoy my smoker now that it has the super steer axle with power steering and cv driveshaft. But to be honest I have not operated an 1864 an extended amount of time.

Even if a valve seat has dropped, it may not look like it. Mine had dropped a seat and pulled it right back in while the head was still hot enough. It would be worth taking it to a machine shop to have new seat counterbores cut for oversize seats with a tighter press fit than Kohler used. Light press and overheating were big contributor's to dropping seats in those. When I got my 1864 you couldn't even see the cooling fins and stator for grease and dirt. It had been very hot.

I think Sam was meaning as built at the factory GT's. The 1864 had the features from the factory that you added.

I don't know what machine shops charge to cut seats and install new anymore, but when I've had it done, it wasn't "cheap". Probably what, about $100 or so for them to do it? You can get a new head for $150. I wouldn't even mess with it if a seat fell out. I'd just buy a new head.

I do agree with you about comparing a 782D with mods that basically make it an 1864. You can't say that your modified tractor is the best one ever made.... well, you can. It's the best ONE ever made, the only one outside of someone else who also made the same mods.

That's right, but I don't doubt for a second that the new heads have a lighter press fit than they should. I don't remember what press fit they have now, but I want to say mine are .006 - .007 vs. about .003. A new head will probably be just fine since most of us here care for our stuff and probably don't overheat them like a previous owner may have.

As a side note, if anyone here has a modern hemi in their car or truck, they had a run of the same problem with press fit.

The only thing that will make my smoker better is a turbo, which is in the works.

Being that I have a bent push rod on each cylinder this may just get parted out. I bought the tractor for the deck and blade. What is a 1864 worth? It would just be the tractor. I don't see it being cost effective to fix. Please correct my eyesight if I am not seeing straight.

An 1864 is actually a really nice machine. I would pull the heads and check it out before I parted if out. I see a valve train kit is $29.05 plus you would need head and valve cover gaskets. The valve train kit has rockers, rocker pivots, rocker bolts and pushrods. I don't remember how many I had to order, but the picture shows enough for the whole engine.

You could even straighten the push rods to get it running so you can make a decision about spending anything on it. They will bend again, so don't run it long.

OK but the 782 didn't come with a super steer axle, power steering or the cv driveshaft and you still don't have a tilt steering wheel.

This is true. Tilt steering would be nice!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
