Overdrive gears
I have a few questions about overdrive gears for the Cub Cadet transmissions. First is how much of an overdrive can be installed before machining of the transmission casing is required, if any would be? If machining is required, does anyone have pictures or descriptions of what needs to be done? And last question would be how fast would the 47% overdrive gears be with 26" tires at 3600 and at 4000 rpm?
Thanks |

Wow. You must be running a pretty big motor to want to go to 47% overdrive at just 3600 and 4K RPM's. That will speed up the trans by 8 gears.
No machining required. Just for you, here is the link to MWSC's gear ratio chart. Go download it, or just access it and plug in the info you want. It will spit out all the info without having to do all those annoying calculations. There's even a "How to use it" video. http://www.midwestsupercub.net/ |

23% needs a little bit of work to get to fit. but it pretty easy. 47 needs allot of work in the reduction housing. all in the upper portion where the top gear goes. I think I have a housing that's clearenced for a 38%

So can the clearancing of the case be done with an angle grinder or a Dremel and lots of great care? Other than clearancing the case does anything else have to be modified? I'm asking for a friend who is building a gator type vehicle out of a Cub Cadet 1200 and needs it to go fast enough to make getting around his property easier and I figured this would be the best place to ask. Thanks

He wants it to go 15-18 mph since he has a lot of land to cover. His has a creeper gear too so he will still have some low end power but it's not going to be tilling or anything. The power from the engine will be used mainly for moving the vehicle itself plus light loads like a hay bale or two and maybe a passenger.

I moved this to the general talk section. This isn't a pulling tractor. |

One of the problems that I see with the overdrive gear set in this application is the inability to go slow when needed, 1st gear and reverse will still be a handful if your trying to maneuver a trailer or on uneven terrain. You won't be able to use it at an idle because the engine will likely stall with that tall of a gear and wot will be insane. This just sounds like a bad idea waiting to hurt somebody.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
