Default Sealed spindle bearings

Wow, this is an old thread but I'm bringing it back. I traded my fully functional 50C deck for what looked like a good 44C so I can get through my gate. Well I pulled the cover off and this 44c is a rust bucket. I see a few small rust holes and the center spindle is loose. I have a sandblaster so I plan to attempt to patch and repair this deck.

Unless ya'll can talk me out of it I plan to put new ball bearings in the bad spindle. Yes, it's the type you can't rebuild but if you knock the seal out and pull out the plastic cage you will see 6 ball bearings. Push them all to one side and the spindle pops out. I saw a guy do it on youtube but he does drone on and on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AyvSQooLyMM

If the balls are worn and the races are ok I'll buy a bag of 100 balls for $5 from McMaster. I'll see if I can find replacement seals as well.

If any of you have worn spindles take them apart and try to figure out what failed, inner race, outer race, or bearings. Maybe we can mix and match our way to a whole mess of good spindles.

What do you all think?

I think you watch too many videos of guys who shouldn't make videos.

You can't rebuild those style of bearings. Once you destroy the plastic cage, how do you plan to hold the balls in place? You have to have a cage. If not, they will all pile up on one side and the shaft will fall out, or it will abruptly stop that shaft (and cause a lot of other damage) if it actually spins long enough to get up to speed before jamming stopped. Sorry dude. If it was that easy to rebuild a bearing, they wouldn't sell new ones.

Buy new bearings. Switch to the other style of bearings using the other spindle, or buy new spindle assemblies. You could even shop around for used spindles that use the tapered bearings and rebuild them.

This is why you need to look things over really good before buying. You may have been able to take the 50" deck and this 44" and made one good one out of the two.

Challenge accepted!

Starting at 8:30 youtube-guy removes the seals, cages, and bearings without damaging anything. At 13:50 he reinstalls the cages.

If I do this and I'm able to mow my lawn without smoking a belt or cutting my toes off, you owe me 2 worn out spindles. If I fail, I will refer to you as the Grand Po-bah for an entire mowing season. So.... raise, fold or call?

Joking aside, I'm going to try it. I'm stubborn like that.

Have at buddy.

I'm not betting anything. Know why? Because I also know that just taking apart and cleaning the crap out of the bearing and getting new lube in it would get them spinning again. They won't last long, but they would work. Plus, I don't know how many acres you mow, or if you only mow 1000 sq feet. I've shot lube in stuck bearings and got them turning again. They didn't last long. If you do "succeed" in getting it all back together, with the cages intact, it may work.... for a while. I'm not going to do it to any of mine. Not worth the time to get another 50 hours of use out of them. Either way, if the bearings you have truly are bad, they won't last long just installing a little bigger ball in them. McMaster bearings are sold in 1/64" increments. Good luck getting a size that helps much at all.

Complete and utter waste of time. But, it's not my time, so have fun.

If you decide to switch the spindles out to the rebuildable style let me know, I'm pretty sure I have a set on the shelf at home.

Thanks, I'll let you know what happens in a few weeks. If the races are worn I won't bother trying to rebuild it, but if the stock size ball tightens it up I'll try to run it.

I recently developed a simple, yet effective system for rebuilding these spindles.

If you're interested you can check it out here;

Good luck!

I buy new "waterpump" style bearings for my 44 and 50" decks. They are available!!!!! No need to waste your time. The replacement bearings are cheaper than the replacement kit Cub Cadet offers.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
