Ih 282...
Anyone have any thoughts about these tractors?
282 hydro.jpg What are they like other than small? Is there still parts available to fix the decks and hydro on them if needed? I am kicking around the idea of getting one for cutting in between the trees around the lot - easier than using a 50" deck on the 982. Any input would be great - good or bad Thanks!

We have a 382H (basically the same thing) that my dad bought used in about 1991 or so. It's on it's second engine and is still going. The transmissions on these can develop slipping issues (common to all the CC LTs for some reason) but that can possibly be fixed by changing out the Hytran for 90W. Dad's had that done about 15 years ago and it still works...it's just a bit noisy. Spindles were still available a few years ago...check the parts lookup to see what is and isn't available.

Personally, I just don't like the vertical shaft (though my Zero 48 has it). If I put $$ into anything, then I want to be able to have the availability of using it for other attachments/duties besides just mowing. However, if the deal is right and it meets your needs........then go for it!

Cub Cadet lt 282
I think that is a good idea! And I also would like to have one just for mowing or driving around the lot. To me, those are just as cool as any other IH CC. .

What about if the engine is blown? Easy to find another engine for it? Whats a new 8hp engine worth normally for these? Not sure if it would be worth it in the end if the engine is way too expensive....but then again "What is too expensive"?

The old 8 hp Briggs that was used on lawn tractors from the 70s and early 80s are NLA. Parts are hard to find. The original engine was a 8 hp Briggs model 191707 and has a 1" x 3-5/32" Keyed Shaft. If you repower, try to find one with that size crank so you can use your pulleys. Remember some of the newer engines may not physically fit in the space under the hood.

Perhaps this isn't a good idea to grab this one? The engine is no good in it and needs to be replaced. Will have to do some searching. I do think the style of them is kinda neat for a little fart of a tractor. Only purpose this would serve or be intended for is to mow grass in tighter spots and be a conversational piece. I would still keep my 982 for regular mowing duties due to the size of my lot. Kinda sucks that I can't mow my ditch with this one unless I can find a re-power with pressure lub on it - then it would have another job on its plate!

You see those and the 382s for sale at times. I've seen a 382 hydro for sale in Wisconsin about a month ago on the IHCC. Maybe it's still for sale. A 382 is similar to the 282. Here's the link to the 382:

If you look around you can find them cheap. I picked up a 382 with a broken rearend for 40 bucks from CL. The motor runs fine and everything else on the tractor is in great shape. I bought it for the deck, the deck looked new. I also picked up a 383 hydro for 140 bucks back in march, wanted it for the hood but my son decided he needed it so he could have a yellow and white one to. He already has a red 182 that I picked up for him for 75 bucks runs great just needed some fresh paint. I geuss what I'm saying is if you look around you can find them with good motors cheap. There's one of those 282 hydros for sale in NY right now on CL.

The replacement engines may be NLA, but so are the K-series engine for our Garden Tractors...
Those engines were also used in a bazillion different things, so I don't think it would be hard to find another one, or parts for that one. Due to the number of those engines produced, I'm sure you can still get parts and stuff for them. In fact, I just searched for a carb kit, piston, rod, stator, and a few other odds'n'ends for the engine at Tulsa Engine Warehouse, and they are all still available. |

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
