Default How far gone, is too far gone?

Hey fellas. Thanks for welcoming me back in my last post. It is good to hear from you guys, too. I have a 1X8/9 and an 82 series fender pans sitting on my porch. The 1x8/9 have a badly rusted battery box and the 82 series are banged up pretty bad. I cannot bring myself to scrap them, even though I pulled them from my garage to the front porch with some other scrap iron that I haven't taken yet. A voice inside of me keeps saying, "You know they aren't making this stuff any more!" and I just cannot part with them. I am not a welder, but I know others can fix this stuff. Think maybe I will just take these to the next show and find someone who wants them. It's not like they are worth much of anything in scrap anyway. Anyone else wrestle with this issue, too?

Yes I do! Every time I buy a Cub for parts, I wrestle with that same little voice. I hear "it's too good to part out" and "fix it." I think your idea of taking it to the next show and offering it to anyone that wants it is a good one. It will ease your conscience.

It's an everyday battle for me! I constantly look at stuff laying around my shop and sitting in the shelves.. do I really need to keep it all? Probably not but most of the time I will eventually use one little item that seems to make it all worth keeping!

I don’t know Maxwell I’m split on this one. I for one spent way to many hours patching some Swiss cheese fenders on my 800 but only because they aren’t that plentiful by me. I built a new battery box for it too. However, you’re in the land of cub plenty so letting go of some of those wouldn’t be bad. I do like you’re idea of going to a show and letting them go to someone who might need them.

I find myself in that situation every now and then and have wondered about what to do that is a good idea about offering them at a show to someone who might need them I have thought about trying to get some of my better parts machines pieced back togather and freed up and possibly running and offer for newer cub enthusists to try to expand the hobby. Then they could live on rather than sitting and continuing to deteriorate.

Yup, same here Maxwell. Been moving chit from one shed to the other, knowing full well I'll never use it.
Good idea, bring your undesirables to a show, if no one wants them, and you still don't see a need to keep em' then chuck em'. At least you tried.

I parted out a SGT. Fender pan sat in the farm scrap metal pile for 7 months- gnawed at me the whole time till I went back to get it. It's a curse.

Yes Max, that's why i have a small scrap pile. I've done the Diesel Doc fix it and that turned into a good mower. I'm thinking of a rat rod now on a 2518 frame with 4 8" wheels, crazy. Mike

I think one of Roland's requirements to join OCC should be
"HI, I'm ________ and I'm a hoarder of all thinks Cub Cadet".

I think a lot of us struggle with knowing, I COULD fix this, make it useable. The flip side is SHOULD I.

I like the idea of offering things either free or cheap to those just starting out in the hobby or those running short on funds. If you don't get any takers then, head for the scrap yard.

I agree!! I had to clean up a bunch of parts when we bought the new house. I had truck caps on skids loaded with engines, trans, harness' etc... I offered parts to some of you guys close to me and sent a BUNCH of stuff down the road to my buddys with a small engine scrap yard but could not part with anything yellow! I am glad I didnt cause now I have a need for the spring assist for the 102. And a carb. And front axel...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
