Default I love my Cub, but HATE the deck!

I love my old 1541, but absolutely hate the 46" deck hanging under it. If the grass is even just a little bit moist it will clump up under deck and I have to stop often and clean it out by hand. Also after mowing, my yard looks more like a hay field. My neighbors all have new zero turn mowers and theirs seem to do a lot better job of "chopping" the grass into smaller pieces whereas mine seems to discharge it whole and it lays on top of the grass and looks awful.

I'd really like to have a rear discharge deck and have thought about building one. I wouldn't have to worry about blowing my cut grass into the neighbors yard and wouldn't have to worry about throwing rocks into my house or car, or worse, the neighbors house or car. I could use newer, readily available spindles and blades as everything I need now is expensive and needs ordered.

This is NOT a good thing, dulls the blades and leaves a poor cut.

What about gator/mulcher blades?
I haven't used them but they're probably available for your deck.

I'll second that! I was also thinking about the grass clumping up under the deck. I wonder if the deck belt is in good working order... As if all the blades are turning?

I saw Post #3. Unless I misunderstand, I'll stand tall with my question asked!

I used a 46" deck for years on several different tractors. The only reason I don't use it any more is I found out how much better the 48"/54" decks cuts.

The only problem I had with the 46" was that it tended to windrow the clippings. I never cut the grass when it is wet and I don't try to cut that short.

Any rear discharge mower I ever saw looked like a hay field that had had a hay rake run through it. Your results may be different.

I agree BUT I will add; I have parts of my yard that grow faster, thicker, and taller than the rest. That leads to me to my point: keep your blades sharp #1, and #2, I think the older decks don't "flow" as well as the newer ones. I've had triangle decks, quietline/82 series a & c decks, and now gt decks. The biggest difference maker is good blades but the newer decks don't seem to clog as much. I've never had my 54gt deck clog but the 44c I had would if I wasn't careful if the grass was damp at all or very thick. Just my

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
