Speaking of keeping it original.... Looks like the tires on it when I brought it home were original.
I found a NOS front tire that somebody out west had posted on a forum. Same EXACT tire, so I snagged it. Even has the original sticker on it!  Even though the tires were shot, the front inner tube still holds air. It's a Goodyear. That thing's gotta have a few decades on it.... I'm reusing it in the new tire.

Spent a little more time with the Walker....
The spark plug threads were stripped, so had to tap some new ones. Went to a couple shops looking for a new gasket. First one gave me the hairy eyeball when I told him what it was for. Looked it up on the computer and found out we could order an aftermarket one. Went to the second store, and got another hairy eyeball. But he rummage through some boxes in the back and found an OEM! Told me to be careful with that one, because it wouldn't happen again. Didn't clean the carb yet, but got it to start and idle. Trying to figure out the automatic choke right now, as I can't tell if it's working right. Also, something interesting in the design.... There's a tube coming out of the exhaust pipe that's directed at the choke. The choke has soot on it. So it appears as the exhaust warms up, the choke is supposed to turn off. Pretty excited that there's spark and compression! Just need to work out some kinks....

It's a 7HP Kohler.... Kohler still makes head gaskets. I don't know why that was difficult. You can still get them new, don't have to go aftermarket. Could have ordered it through Cub Cadet even (if you wanted to pay for it).
Yes, the exhaust warms the spring for the choke. No mystery there. Common in "older" things.

Glad to see you working on it again!
I had forgotten about this thread... I think it's an awesome project! Should be a K161 Kohler.. none of the local guys keep anything for the K series any more but like Jon said parts are still easy to get... prob just have to order them.. Keep us posted!
