He said, "pull the cover off the air filter and give it a little shot of gas down the carb throat" nothing about carb cleaner....

Does this engine use any oil? My k301 in my 1200 was so worn it wouldn't start unless you jumped with my truck. Used a quart in 2hrs. If she's badly worn they don't like starting.

The engine doesn't use oil.
I pull off the air filter and prime the motor through the carburetor every time I start the motor from a cold start. I have poured gas directly in the carburetor and it doesn't crank. When I spray a quick shot of ether directly in the carburetor it starts. When engine has been running during the day it cranks instantly with no ether. When I stated in earlier posts that I cranked it the same way you were describing I assumed that was a sufficient answer... Sorry

No gas in oil. It cranks fine the rest of the day using it . It just requires that one shot on first start of the day.

I mentioned in an earlier post I replaced the fuel pump 2 years ago and the old fuel pump did exactly what you said & in drained gas into the oil, cleaned the crankcase really well.

Kind of late to this one but what about the strength of the spark? I'm thinking maybe the spark is a tad weak. I'm thinking starting fluid is more volatile and helps with cranking when it is cold. Once the engine has some heat in it, it cranks better? Id finish the carb and choke checks as suggested first. Can you choke the engine enough to actually flood the plug when trying to crank it? Grasping at straws here

I missed that you tried it with gas, sorry. Have you done a compression test? Just thinking it may be a little low and the ether is just enough to get it to fire.
I trust that you have downloaded the service manual. http://www.onlycubcadets.net/forum/s...ead.php?t=4648

Default Just a thought

This is just a thought I have, but you don't by chance have a bad intake gasket or loose intake manifold. The reason I am thinking this is:
When cranking slow it may allow enough reduction in vacuum to not pull or vaporize the fuel well. With ether it is vaporized from the can. As for using the gasoline if it doesn't vaporize it will not start. Have you tried to crank it using your hand over the carburator? This one is an interesting problem. I kope you figure it out and I am following this one.

jcrews

I moved this thread to the Kohler engine area, hope you'll get more ideas here.

I haven't had time to test the plugs yet but I can't flood the spark plugs with the choke. After that 1 small shot of ether it fires instantly and anytime on during the day no ether is needed to crank it. I'm planning on compression check 2 years ago it was pretty strong just have to borrow equipment. I still need to check carburetor & manifold gaskets also. I hope it's not time for new rings but it's looking that way. Thank you for the help

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
