Yes nice job Frank, that cradle mod will make a big difference in vibrations, at least it did on mine

I have been following this thread because I had the 1000 I grew up on shipped to me and I bought a 1450 a few weeks later. My younger brother had the 1000 for a few years and it wasn't running when I got it back. That is the fate of any machine he gets his hands on. The bright side is the clutch linkage broke before he could do a lot of damage. I am waiting to dig in deep until I get the engine running and drive it. So far I had to rebuild the clutch (I don't know how you couldn't hear a bearing that was seized up like that), cradle mod, steering repairs and get the engine running. I'm waiting for Kohler parts so it may be a while before I get it running.

The 1450 was a basket case that was rode hard and not put away. It lived in the winter rains. I am doing what I am calling a preservation first. I want to get it running and drive it this year. Next winter I'll tear it down and repaint it. I want to set up the 1000 for mowing and the 1450 for tilling.

Great thread and great restoration. This is motivation for me to do the same with my 1450 next year.

Bob

Two steps forward, one step back... Rebuilt and installed the carb, installed the firewall, hooked up the throttle and choke cables, and started on the electrical only to discover I had caught the spark plug cable UNDER the engine when I bolted it down. Doh! No wonder I had to finagle the engine around to get the bolts lined up. Anyway, unbolted the engine and removed the crushed spark plug cable, will need to replace that. got the engine back in place and bolted down again.

Installed a new battery and then hooked up the starter 12v+ and grounds, and repaired the wiring harness where it had been nicked. Also ran the new lead to the PTO. Verified the engine turns over with the ignition switch and the PTO operates as it should. Yeah! Electrical is in good shape.

Next step is to install the fuel system and test run the engine. I'll do that, then re-torque the head bolts and finish assembly. All the remaining parts are painted, and ready to install. Just need to apply the decals. Once the engine is buttoned up, the rest should go pretty quickly. I do not have a muffler shroud for this engine. I'm going to wait to see how it runs and then decide if I want to add that.

Your 1000 has really come along well! It found someone to give it the attention it needed and breathe new life back into it. As a fan of the front ags, too, they look great and you already know the advantage they give to ease of steering. Keep up the nice work and finish strong!

I just came in from the shop after test running the engine. the throttle shaft is very loose, and the engine will not run very well. I double checked the timing, it's spot on. Good spark. The valves are adjusted properly. The carb is flooding out despite a rebuild. Float looks fine and does not leak. Will require some more troubleshooting. Perhaps a different carb to verify the issue...

Thanks for the words of encouragement. I am confident this will be one of my favorite tractors when I get done. It's just going to take more time. And as the weather warms (it was 75 here today, all the trees are blooming) shop time gets scarce as yard work increases...I'll get there one way or the other.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
