Another 782 followed me home...

At this rate I'm going to have 52 of them a year from now....

I couldn't pass this one up though. PO says that it's got a bad starter, and it runs if you give it a whack. Engine looks relatively clean, and it turns over real easy. Came without tires or a deck, so I just threw some crap wheels on it to let it roll. No fun toys on it.

It's got a KT17 II in it, and it's an IH model from May of 80.
It's missing a few things, but nothing too tough to find. Springs for the tinwork, an upper grill and lights, needs a new steering wheel, and a few other odds and ends. It does have really good looking side tin too. Came with original owner's manual.

I picked up a 44A deck as well, but will need to swap the pulley and drill a new hole for the hanger.

I got the gauge wheel back on my other one yesterday, and went a few times around the yard chopping up leaves and whatnot. It's hard to believe how smooth these things are compared to the 1xx series tractors.

I'm glad you went and got that thing
I kept looking at the pictures wondering what I would do with it.
it was the tires not included that kept me from going on it.

Hah I'm not sure what I'm going to do with this one yet either, but I figured it was worth the $150 the guy was asking for it, especially if it runs.

Great tractor for the price! A guy across town had a 582 for sale this summer. I almost got it, but he would not come down off the $200 price he wanted. He was a nice guy and all, but a 582 with blown engine,... I wanted to see it sell for that money. Guess he towed it behind his garage.

I didn't know if it had a KT17 I or II until I got over there. Was a little anxious about that one, but if it was recently running, it was worth 150 either way.

I just saw a guy put a 782 in pieces that hasn't been functional in 10 years with a stuck engine on craigslist in MN for 1500 bucks.

I love these things, but come on.

Took it up to the farm today, in Humboldt, where it's probably going to end up living. My brother and I unloaded it and started tinkering with it.

Put a battery in it, a junky seat on it, a fuel filter in it and some fresh gas. Checked the oil (looked good). Tried to start it. Starter spun, but bendix drive didn't engage. Took the engine tin off (that's a PITA without the right tools), and poked at it a bit. It was REALLY dirty down there by the gear. Tried cranking it again, and it bit and turned over really nice. No fire though.

Pulled a plug. It wasn't wet at all, but had a nice blue spark. Pulled stuff off the carb, and, well, the carb is not in a good place. The choke butterfly was...sticky, and the main butterfly was straight up stuck. Pulled the big needle out and it had varnish all over it. Pulled off the carb and worked things gently loose and it's back to moving again, but pulled off the float bowl and the float looks ok (needs cleaned, but ok), but the needle valve is stuck. Looks like a good cleaning and a rebuild should cure what ills it though.

Also, the fuel lines probably need replaced, and there was a bit of a leak from the fuel pump, so I'll probably be pulling that off, if not replacing it. Not sure exactly how and why it would leak. Maybe too much back pressure from the carb needle not opening?

Overall, I think it'll run with a bit of elbow grease and a few smallish parts. So far so good!
