Cub Cadet Model 55 Questions
Hi folks! I have a '72 Cub Model 55 (I'm new here, so feel free to go see my New Member post for the great history on this little guy...)
Anyway, I have two questions. 1) I would like to add electric start to this engine (Briggs 130902, 0376-01, 7206216) and I need a source for a kit, or parts and advice to complete the job if it is even possible with this engine. Or, do you fine folks have good recommendations otherwise? Repower with an appropriate new drop-in replacement? Or find an 8 HP upgrade that was on the Model 85 that should be ready to go? Any suggestions would be appreciated. 2) Since the restoration, I've had an "incident" with a tree, and need fiberglass body work on my 55 shell. Where/how would you recommend a repair? Body shop? Or can I do it myself? I'd like to again retain original decals as they are in great shape. I'm assuming they can be masked off. That's what I did the first time, and they look great. Many thanks. Looking forward to the time spent here. I've included a pic of the finished product from about ten years ago. It's had wonderful hours of use since (including the body damage) so it's not quite as cherry now, but still wonderful. John Gordon Huntsville, AL |

Sweet 55 and great story! Got any pics of it currently? especially after the encounter with a tree? That will help in determining the extent of the damage.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
