No, then the other end wouldn't match. The joints are made with same sizes on both ends.

were it mine i would drill all the way thru tap it out and countersink the back side to thread one bolt in from the back side so i would have a stud sticking out to put the rod end onto. that is if the threads were wiped out enuff just to put a longer bolt into it

I agree with the above ideas. Clean out the hole, use a new bolt, loctite it, and see if it tightens down first.

You may be right about the over engineering part, it's tough to shake the racer mentality where your physical well being depends on the hardware staying together. I am building this tractor for my 83 year old Dad, he isn't very mechanically inclined and I don't want him to have any problem. I am going to re-tap the hole and try the locktite and new bolt and see if it holds.

Amen on the racer mentality brother. We have both seen stuff put together poorly that ended up with bad results at the track. I think your Dad is going to end up with a sweet machine when your done with it.

If you really want a heli-coil in it, I can do it for you. Something to remember about heli-coils is that they will usually only be 1.5 times the diameter of the bolt or in this case 3/4" and stacking them doesn't always work too well.

According to parts tree, the bolt is a 1/2-20x1.5" long. Is the bolt you have long enough?

I discovered the hole in the bracket is only threaded part of the way. I cleaned the threads with a tap but still wasn't happy with the way the new bolt fit. The hole is almost 1 1/2" deep, but the threads only went in about 3/4". By running the tap all the way to the bottom of the hole I was able to put a longer bolt in as suggested and get it pulled down tight. Looks like this just might work.

Yes the bolt that came out and the one I tried first was x 1/2" 20 x 1 1/2" , after running the tap all the way to the bottom of the hole I was able to use a 2" bolt.
