LT 1554 repower sugguestions
So the neighbor guy has a lt1554 that the motor is blown. He says it ain't worth fixing and I can have it. Any ideas for a replacement motor for it? Keep in mind that I am trying to do this as cheaply as possible. Also can anyone tell me the diameter and length of the output shaft on the motor? I am more into the IH cubs, these newer mtd ones are foreign to me so if I sound stupid I apologize in advance. Thanks in advance for any advice.

That mower should have the Kohler 27hp v twin, correct? I just changed out the same type motor in my zero turn with a Briggs v twin that I lucked up and got for about $600 instead of a grand. Now with that said, I have found several Briggs V twins on Craigslist for $300 and under, I just simply wanted a new motor that I would not have to worry about. The main shaft should be @ 3 1/8" in length. I will have to check on the diameter. I want to say 1" but may be 3/4". The wiring really turned out to be pretty easy once I got my head wrapped around what the colors for the factory wire harness did and what needed to be connected to the engine. I also had to add a starter selonoid as the Briggs does not have that built into the starter like the Kohler does. Also another plus is that the exhaust pipes from the Kohler mounted up perfectly to the Briggs, so there should be no surprises there. Other than that it's not bad. I did have to study the wiring harness diagram a bit, but I think I can get some pics of how I have mine wired up for you to see how it should work.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
