I think the advance is built into the coils ( advance the pole positions 15*) and the delay is controlled by dwell on the primary side of the coil . not in the flywheel .
but like you said we need to find out what the timing specs are on a working Sam motor . I know what Kohler said when I asked about conversion , I was told to leave it stock .. they were no help . and I also know the motor will pull the govenor at speed in tall grass that before it would go right thru without a hitch .. ( lost some power )

Well I wasted some time talking to Kohler. Basically there answer is to replace the coils and SAM with the later style stuff. They couldn't or wouldn't give me any help on how to convert to the Mag style ignition. That said if it was my engine I'd do as Stimpy and hookup a kill button to the kill wire to ground out the Mags while you spin it over then release the button to get it to fire. Not very elegant but it should make it easier to start it.
As I mentioned I put a set of regular Mags on a CH22, it ran OK but the sound changed, can't say if it effected the performance one way or the other. All I did was replace the coils with Mags (they bolt in the same place), rewired the kill wire like a CH18. I didn't change the flywheel.

the exhaust tone change is from the fuel burn down in the cylinder vs in the head , the muffler/cylinder will be hotter too , ( check the plugs for the mixture and heat , I had some run rich ( most) and some turned the plug white and started melting the strap )
as for power , unless you know what it will do , I doubt you would notice the 1-2 horsepower loss . heck many Banging and Smoking guys thought they had 20 Hp under the hood and were running only 15-18 actual but there butt dyno was fooled .. ( I always say Dyno figures don't cut grass..)

kohler Ch25s SAM Conversion
So I know this post is old, but...I will pass this on for others who may be having issues with this engine and the smart spark ignition system. I have the same Kohler spec on my 1994 Bunton.
First, the short answer to question about conversion: Kohler now sells a conversion kit for the Ch25s, that replaces both the coils and the flywheel to convert to MDI. The kit is about $125 from various suppliers for the CH25, Part number is 24 755 308-s, and note that it is different than the kit offered for other hp motors. Kohler put out a parts bulletin that reads as follows: "Kohler is currently unable to provide direct replacement components for the ASAM (analog spark advance module) 24 584 09-S, 2458409S and 24 584 10-S, 2458410S modules. Until such replacements are available, the ignition system will need to be converted using the appropriate kit for the engine being serviced. The conversion kit includes two new ignition modules, new flywheel, duplex lead, and installation instructions." On my Kohler, I have one bad ignition module. Symptom was that one side has intermittent spark, and testing of the coil per the service manual revealed there is NO continuity on this side, let alone resistance, between the spark boot end and the laminations. Visual inspection of my bad coil revealed that one leg was delaminating, and there is a nice scar on the bottom. The other side tested fine. I have the older coils on this machine (shorter height), and have read that if I replace one coil with the newer coils (taller height) that I would have to replace both coils, or possibly overload the old SAM box. Fortunately, I found the older short version coil, NOS, on ebay, so I am going to try just replacing the one coil to see if it solves the problem. If it doesn't work, I will buy that conversion kit and eliminate the SAM, which everyone says is problematic. |

I bought a 2284 the other day. Seemed really cold natured in that if you didn't have the choke on a little, it wouldn't stay running. I chalked it up to a dirty carb or something minor. Then, I found out the tractor had the SAM ignition on it so I started researching what's up with them.
One thing I ran across is that you need a healthy battery to make them run right. I put a new battery in the 2284 and I no longer needed the choke on at all after the initial start. Then, I found the number for the Kohler kit for the replacement ignition modules. I believe the correct number for my tractor is 25 707 03 S. I also found out it no longer needs 12 volts to power up the ignition modules. I guess that explains the previous paragraph I posted? |
