Kohler K301 question

Can you convert any K301 engine into an AQS engine Quietline model?
I believe it's an AQS engine I need for a 1250.

Aaah, so all the PTO holes aren't tapped? Didn't know this.

301 should already have a deep sump oil pan.
Not only are they not tapped, I do believe the holes are not even there.
And you will need a PTO to boot.
You will need a flywheel w/ring gear also. A stator and rectifier. and a starter.
You will need all the tins and blower housing, different air cleaner and tube.
different muffler and elbow plus the front aluminum cast piece to bolt the tins to.
Do you already have the engine cradle and cradle mounts, OEM or solid?
This ain't gonna be cheap, although a decent AQS should not be too hard to find w/most everything you need, or maybe you already have some of this stuff.
There was a one owner 1250 sold here Sat for $400 and had a front blade and a deck.

Yah sounds expensive to me. I will just look for a used non smoking K301 AQS for my 1250.

Guys, he already has a 1250 with a motor in it. All he wants to know is if he can get a K301 and make it a K301AQS. He has all the parts, just needs a good short block.

The answer is maybe. Some 301's DO have the holes, and DO have the hole for the dipstick. But it has to be a later block. You will also have to tap the holes for the right side dipstick, but they are there. (If your 1250 has that style of dipstick, there are two styles.) You will also have to remove the exhaust elbow, (not easy) off both motors and switch them. You will have to remove the dipstick tube off the replacement motor and put a freeze plug in it. That is *IF* you find a later 301. If it's an early one, then it will not have any of the holes you need for the PTO, dipstick or anything. Oh, almost forgot, you will likely have to change the rear block plate. Some were already tapped and set up for a stator, some were not.

Did not know he already has an AQS.
Figured he may have just had a roller in need of an engine.
Either way, it will be a hassle, just O/H the one you have.

I once converted a 301 block to AQS. If it already has pre drilled holes that makes life a little easier. The block I did had no holes in it so I set the PTO on the crank and transfer punched where the holes needed to go. I got a 3/8th tap drill and put a stop on it so as not to drill through the block. Tapped as far as I could with a standard tap then got out the bottoming tap to finish the holes. Couple hours of puttering around but it can be done. Then I added all the other goodies to the other side of the engine.

That is my bad. I guess I just misunderstood. I guess I was just assuming he had a 1250 with a motor, but only because he mentioned finding a non-smoking one. I may be mistaken.
