Replace your lawn tractor with an well built garden tractor. I personally like the older IH built Quietline series but those are not for everyone. I recommended that tractor for these reasons; 1) Well built and heavy duty for many lawn and garden chores, 2) That model has power steering and hydraulic lift...easy to use, 3)Will last many years if properly serviced and maintained. Choose any model you wish, I referenced that model because many here use that one and are pleased with it's capabilities. Current Cub Cadet LT's may not give you 28 yrs of good service that you are accustomed.

Have you checked with sponsors listed in the heading for a replacement transmission?

I know these John Deere's are a good tractor if they are used properly, and tuff torq is known for making good transmissions. I'm not trying to say these are not good machines. But for what he is doing with it, he needs something a little stronger than what is in a Lowes or Home Depot model.

To the OP:
McGrew: You won't find a new transaxle for that machine that will retrofit easily. Besides.... that machine isn't worth a new transaxle. I'm sorry, but that is just the blunt truth. There are a lot of similar designed units out there, but none will likely bolt in. No way anyone would know what to recommend.... You would have to get specs on the mounting and belt height to know. You could guess, but in a quick search, the lowest priced transaxle unit I see is still $400 (and I wouldn't use it)... that's a lot to spend on a guess. I'd wager to guess that to find a unit comparable to yours, you will likely be spending $600-$900. Your best bet is a used axle if you really want to keep that machine. Ebay, or put up a wanted ad.... or just go find a used CC lawn tractor and take the trans out of it. Be sure to service and clean it before installing.
Honestly, we understand sentimental value to a machine. A lot of us have tractors that were dad's, granddads, uncles or the first machine we used. But a lot of time, they get repaired, restored, and retired. We get them out and play once in a while, but they don't all get used daily. If the tractor means that much.... buy another machine. Fix that one with a used axle and put it on "lawn cart" duty. Just my

IHCubCadet147..... you're 16 man. You haven't "seen" enough of anything yet to be so adamant about what is good or bad. Like Beth said, unless you personally have removed and replaced several of the same bad part and know the real reason of why they are failing..... don't just get some random Google answers and post them. Not cool man. Anyone can Google.

Just kind of goes to show.... be careful whose advice you take. Might just be some kid on the other end of the keyboard playing like he's changed 50 bad transaxles in the last couple years.

McGrew, I've got the 1330 I bought new off the showroom floor back in 92. It replaced your 1320. Still have it, but it's now just sitting, as the GT's took over mowing chores.
But to be honest with you, you got your money out of it. They did have a issue with their trans from day one. Mine does still work, and it did mow more than it was designed to mow. Maybe I got lucky.
So if you can find a used one, keep in mind, it'll be a roll of the dice on if it's good, on its way out, or just another junk one...
And I do understand sentimental value toward a lawnmower. I know I would never get rid of mine. The only one I ever bought new. But to spend a bunch of money on a used trans, isn't a chance I would take, unless it's in a drivable/usable tractor.
As a note. I picked up five tractors over the years of this style, different models, but all with the same trans, and they were all burned up junk.

John Hall, DeltaCub, IHCubCadet, ol'George, J-Mech, and Zippy, I want to thank each of you for your responses. You all make valid arguments about 1) not being able to find a modern trans that will bolt in, 2) its not worth the money or time to do it. I find it hard to believe that none of you have ever spent more time and money than something was worth, just to have the satisfaction of bringing an old tool back to life! I know I have done it many times and doubt I am alone!

John Hall: My 1320 is in fact a 12.5 Kohler, but the hydro lever is on the dash, just right of the steering wheel. I thought I might move it to the right floor board when I changed the trans. And yes, the old Kohler starts and runs like new.

ol'George and Zippy1: I tried to find an exact replacement for the original trans, but finding a good working 30 year old transaxle is not easy. Although mine lasted 28 years, apparently I was in the minority. I did find a few used ones out there, but they were worse than the one I have...

All: Most of you are saying to let this old girl die a peaceful death in the scrap yard... Did I mention that my wife of 35 years, who does most of the yard work, wants to see her usable again? I bought a new lawn tractor 2 years ago, so this 1320 will not see daily use, but will only act as a back up, and will be used to pull the aerator or drag harrow, as the new lawn tractor is probably not up to the task. Yes, the new one is a Cub XT1...

I have the skills and tools to make just about any transaxle work in this application. What I wanted to avoid was spending a lot of time making a weak transaxle fit, just to find out it was not up to the task...

I am searching the local salvage yards for a good transaxle, so I will not be spending a huge amount of money. Most of the yards have quoted prices of $125-200 for the part. I found a NEW Tuff Torq K66 online for $350, although do not plan to spend that much... I am not made of money, but do have some time on my hands...

Please do not think I am not listening to your advice, as I really do appreciate it, but I am going to make this old 1320 work again! I hope you understand! Please continue to provide guidance!

It is good to see opinions expressed in a constructive & honest way.
A lot of us here have repaired/restored things that were not worth the time, energy or money spent.
But we did it and it was/is worth it to us.
I have BTDT and more than once.

Gentlemen, Thank you for your responses and support! One question I failed to answer was whether I contacted any of the sponsors of this group... The answer is I have not. I am trying to find a replacement locally to save shipping costs... Did I mention I am cheap? I have seen shipping costs that rival the cost of the part. Thanks again!
