Default Trans problems

Hello all, my first time posting here. I need your experience, i just got into the old IH Cubs. I picked a 106 up for cheap, but i couldn't get it out of gear. The guy i bought it from said when he got it a year ago it was not locked(if you can believe him). But it's been freezing cold and it's been outside all this time. I was thinking mineral spirit's and brake fluid to let set in trans. Any ideas what direction i should go?

First. welcome to OCC....

First thing I would suggest, is bring the tractor into an environment where the temperature is above the freezing point and see if this bears any fruit, and frees things up. Maybe water has gotten inside.

If that doesn't free things up....on to plan B.

Thank you, it's supposed to warm up some this weekend. I'm gonna take my heater out and put it in the trans and go from there.

Again, you will need to apply enough heat for 24 hrs.

I sure will put the heat to it, I'm hopeful that the trans will free up. But in case whats plan B? Rebuilding or replacing?

Thaw and drain first. Plan B - remove top cover at shift lever and inspect.

I've had a bunch do that when sitting outside forever in freezing temps. As stated water gets inside when the cast iron sweats. Just got a 108 earlier this week same issue. Brought in garage and it set over night and shifts through all gears fine. Naturally changing fluid in it

I'll bet on a mass of rusted frozen shift forks, springs, poppets and shift spools.
May not be better even if I is thawed out.
My 104 was that way when I picked it up in Aug 2 years ago.
Good luck!!

Thanks all for the help, it got about 45 today so i ran out to the barn and with fingers crossed i grabbed the shift lever. I had to work it but it started moving and got it out of gear! Now I'm gonna change the trans oil now and pick up a new battery. Hope he was right and it runs!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
