Default Used K301

The K321 in my 149 finally gave up. I found a used K301 out of a IH Cub that should be able to go right in my 149 without an issue. Supposedly the only things it needs is a carb, coil, and starter all of which I have. He's asking $100. Is that a reasonable price? And is there anything specific I should be looking for when buying one of these motors used?

If you purchase it understanding it could be a diamond, or a lump of coal
needing rebuilt, you won't be disappointed.
Unless it is dissembled for inspection, nobody has any idea of it's actual condition.

Yea I know it's kind of a crap shoot. I've bought something from this person before so that helps a little. My problem is my 149 is my plow tractor for the winter and I don't have the time or space to rebuild the K321 myself at the moment. And for some reason no one in my area wants to touch the K series engines not that I have the money to pay for someone else to do it anyways. So I'm thinking if I can pay $75 or $100 and it gets me through snow season then that's fine.

Sounds like a decent price if the engine is OK. Only problem I see is you can't hear it run. Do you know the guy well enough you could give him 1/2 the money, install the engine, crank it up and if all is OK pay the rest? In a nutshell you are in a tight spot with the "best way" out needing time and money--both are in short supply.

I'll toss out a couple other ideas. Ask around for an old timer that works on the older stuff in his home garage. My dad did this for over 20 years after he retired. His shop rate was about 1/3 what a repair shop charged. Most stuff was turned around in 2 days to 2 weeks--your case would be closer to 2 weeks while waiting on the machine shop. Heck, they even pushed machine work through for dad as he was a fairly frequent customer.

Know any pullers? If one of them is beginning a project machine and has a running engine they are fixing to rip apart and modify, maybe trade yours with some cash.

I understand your position, but like I said before, NOBODY knows the condition unless it is taken apart for evaluation.
You can take a chance, it's only money and I never seen a hearse with a luggage rack.
I have to wonder why it was stripped of parts if it was a good engine??

I see lots of engines sold that way, the seller wants to extract every dime possible, they sell the starter carb and such separately. actually irritates me to no end. there's a 301 that has been on my local CL for $100 without any of those parts but with a busted rod and they have had that thing advertised with a $100 asking price forever,

that said last week one day I saw a K321 advertised on a CL in Wisconsin, brand new in the crate ("bought for project that never materialized") for only $300. I have spent more than that om an overhaul more than once.

These old Kohler's will run forever even if they smoke. If the connecting rod isn't broke then it will run, just can't guarantee for how long. If you need an engine for a plow tractor just to get through the winter then it might be your best bet.

$100 for a motor is a good price. Starter for a S/G engine is never included. The carb and coil....... no big deal. Coil on the 14hp is the same. Carb is different I believe...... can't remember. 10 and 12 take the same carb, can't remember if the 14 takes the same or not.

Might want to investigate a little further to see what series IH cadet the 301 came from. NF blower housings have the coil mounted real low and can’t be mounted there on WFs plus the housings won’t swap unless flywheel is swapped I believe. Different head stud and exhaust heat shield configurations sometimes. None of these things are a big deal but just putting it out there.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
