1650 Common Problems
I have a friend who might be buying this 1650.
https://allentown.craigslist.org/grd...594169165.html Does it seem like a fair price? What are some common issues on them? It says it runs, but needs work, what should I expect to have to do to it? I know the motor mounts go bad. How do you check them, and are they expensive to replace if needed?

If it runs and drives the price is fine but I would try to get it for less. Around here that 16hp engine is worth the asking price.

If the motor can be moved ( rocked) easily, the mounts are probably shot. I make solid motor mounts plus driveline parts if he needs them.

Make sure it still has the 16hp in it also, they tend to get swapped out.

Common repairs (assumes it runs and cuts grass) depends on whether you just want it running and working or if you want to put it back in reasonable original condition.
I'd expect $500 in basic repairs to get a reliable worker, going through engine mounts, carb, tune up, fuel system, points, condenser, plug and wire, wiring repairs, steering system repairs, trunnion springs and repair. Add $200 more if it needs relief valves. Tires look worn, so you could kick in another $600 for new tires. It could easily cost $3000 to $4000 to return it to close to original condition, looking and working almost as it did from the dealer. Side tins, muffler and air ducting, fire wall, lights, tires, paint, grill, body work, seat, steering rebuild, etc. $450 is not too bad, but I've gotten much nicer for just a bit more. I'd be looking to pay $300 or so.

I paid $300 for one last month here in Maryland in better shape. But I also put another $400 in repairs. ISO mounts, driveshaft flex disc and bushings, cooling fan, carb rebuild , upgrade cradle repair , Hydo fluid and filter , oil change and tune up , Ross steering upgrade , tie rod ends and a few others.
Lots of fun to do and worth it IMO. I would try to offer less for sure. Maybe 250-300 Good Luck |

Thanks everyone. I will pass this information on to him and see what he says. I don't think he is too worried about condition as long as it mows. He is looking to replace the Craftsman he has now. He wants something more heavy duty. I think he will like a cub much more.

If it runs, it's well worth the money asked. You wouldn't touch that, for that price in these parts. Unless the seller was braindead, and had no clue what these are worth...
Waive four honda's his way, and see what happens.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
