I'm confused. The shear bolt, is a bolt. So.... what was in it?

Buddy, you can do whatever you want, but I'm not sure that I'd put any money into it. But, if that's what you want to do, go ahead. Yes, those parts are right. All you have to do is look at the pic and follow the numbers. Don't really need us to confirm do you?

Shear "bolt" is what is listed but it's a pin actually. Same style that is used in kingpins for the front on most small engine machines. And why not order the $40 worth of parts for the blower and try to get it working?

Do you think a running working cub cadet isnt worth less than $200?

The heavy wet snow that I have been getting is too much for my single stage thrower.

Saving a cub and also getting some experience.

Seems like a good deal to me and I'm sure I am not alone.

Parts book shows the shear pin for the auger to be a 5/16"-18 bolt with a nut. Unless you are talking about a different thing. Meh. I might throw $40 at the blower and maybe some paint.... but I am not sure it's worth $100 after all that. But, you never know what some people will buy.
If it was me, I'd put the money in it and never be able to get it back out. This coming from a guy (me) with a 450 blower....

Not that one....

I don't buy that. I've used a single stage blower. It will eat anything you feed it. I've blown basically water out of one. Maybe yours isn't running fast enough, or you aren't operating it correctly.

Now, this isn't "wet" snow, but it was heavy snow:
You can tell how heavy it is, no farther than it's getting thrown.

Maybe, maybe not. I wouldn't consider that to be a "Cub Cadet" though. Just an MTD with shaft drive. Not trying to insult you. But I'm with Sam, I'd keep the engine....

moving back to the topic... the 2 stage blower... not the tractor it is on...

I will wait for parts to come in and see if this blower will earn its keep. May just paint the entire thing black and be done with it.

What lubricant/grease/oil is everyone using in the auger gear box? And before anyone says check the manual let me say this... yes I can read the manual but if anyone would like to be helpful and provide some insight, it would be appreciated. Manuals are helpful but if that is where everyone is pointed to for information this site would be rendered useless. If you know the answer please help if you are going to answer my question with a search recommendation or complain about my comments... well... ... make your own thread in the general discussion please.

You can use JD cornhead grease, or get the lube from CCC, or you can make your own. That's what I do. I mix synthetic gear lube and Marathon Maraplex grease until I get the consistency of runny pudding. I have a post about it somewhere..... but I'm not going to go dig it up, lol.

Sooooo.
My post about the manual for your blower was not helpful?
Why do you think they have them?
Let me know how you feel...

Keep up the good restoration of your snow blower. So many people on this website just like to try to prove they are smarter and better by belittling other peoples ideas or what they choose to repair. I got reamed out one spring when I asked questions about my 2 451 blowers, I was told to wait and fix my blowers in the fall. So,you decided to pay $40 in parts and repair your snow blower I agree with you and fix it! When you are done and having a beer with a smile on your face, you will know exactly how the blower works, and know how to fix it. Sounds like a low cost class with great benefit to me Don.

Thanks for the motivation! I got a bunch of parts that came in, I decided to get all new bushing, bearings, and seals! I just have to paint the thing and then I can put it back together! Seeing all the boxes on the porch is like Christmas in March!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
