Default 1450 44c

Hey guys. I picked up a 1450 with a 44c about a month ago. I know from reading here that it should have a 44a but the C will work. I have mowed with it a few times and the 1/2" rod that holds the mule drive pulleys broke in two, shredding the belt. I had some SS 9/16" rod laying around and turned it down and have that fixed, but the deck needs all new bearings and blades and someone has done a lot of brazing on it in various places. It has one rust hole in it. There don't seem to be much parts around here for these old ones. Is the deck worth fixing/patching or should I search the hills of East TN for a good replacement?

I think I'd be looking for another deck. It would cost a bunch to fix that deck up and there are enough good (not rusted through) decks around that you will wind up with a better end result I think.

Try to find a 44A deck, otherwise if you get a 44C, You'll need the 44A center pulley to use that deck on the 1450 (I've got the exact same combination--44C and a 1450-- and just changed pulleys. It speeds up the deck and improves the cut and matches the 3/8 belt much better. You'll need a different belt as well as the pulley on the deck is smaller.)

I'm pretty sure you can buy a very nice deck (consider a 50A as well) for the cost of 3 new spindles. If you do decide to keep the deck, you can swap out the center pulley pretty easily to make it a 44A.

Good luck

I was leaning toward finding a new one. I guess the search is on! Finding one that someone has for a reasonable price might be the tricky part.

Sometimes you have to buy the whole tractor to get the deck-then sell the tractor and keep the deck. Or keep both! that's my approach!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
