Good to know about the Dekka/O'reileys connection. I've bought about 3 larger batteries from them in the last 2-3 years. O'reileys has a pretty good rewards program for frequent customers as well.

Very interesting write-up regarding more CCA in the same size case possibly being a tradeoff for longevity.

In terms of robustness, a lower CCA battery will be more robust than a high CCA battery given same case size.

First, the higher the CCA of a battery (and let's assume the plastic-cases are all the same dimensional size for comparison), a 400CCA battery as compared to a 250CCA battery will have to have more lead plate surface area, thus thinner lead plate thickness to fit into the same case in order to achieve the extra CCA capacity. Thus, a 250CCA battery will have thicker plates in the same sized case as a 400CCA battery. The 400CCA battery will give more CCA, but at a cost of thinner plates and less space between plates for electrolyte.

Everything you have posted above is possibly true except for one thing. You're assuming the battery case, whatever size it may be is stacked full of plates, whether they be thick or thin. This isn't the case at all.

Here is just one brand of battery that has an economy battery and a premium battery in the SAME SIZE case. 7 5/16", 7 3/4" long and 5 13/16" wide.

The cheapo is listed as a U1-1

160 CCA
200 CA
Weight 15 lbs.

The premium battery is listed as a U1-3

CCA 340
CA 375
Weight 17 lbs.

As you can see, the manf. is getting 2 lbs more plates in the premium battery than the economy whether it be thicker or thinner plates. Bottom line, there is extra space in the cases to provide more capacity.

Per my recommendation above, I always buy the premium battery here. Usually costs about 30% more but I find the reserve and the longevity is worth it.

Here is a link I used as a reference.

I just bought an interstate SP-40 at Home Depot for $49.97 350CCA. One thing to be aware of is how long the battery was sitting on the shelf. They had batteries that were over a year old. I made them go in the back and get a battery with current date stamp.

I personally have had a lot of success in the U1 group utilizing the Diehard Gold . Most of my Cubs are using model # Ul 50785, With 340CCA. I think it has helped that I use a battery tender when not in use.

Nope, these are going in my 2 Swisher tow behind mowers. Almost time to cut grass although the weather guesser is calling for snow Sunday.

The deals on the Cubs are as good as they are getting. Most of the guys on OCC and other sites want Ultra Cheap deals. Then they dump a ton of $$$ into them but they got them cheap. My stuff has already had a ton of $$$ dumped into them.

You hit the nail on the head Sam.. when you buy one ultra cheap get ready to sink some $$$....

The 2182 we got from you last year hasn't missed a beat!! But you had already sunk mucho time and $$$ into it... I still consider it a great deal because we were able to bring it home and put her straight to work!

The 1782 I bought cheap elsewhere.... I'm bout there... but I have sunk some time and $$$ into it!

I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one that you have had ahold of!!

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
