So what's everyone using for rebuild kits?
I've deiced to give up looking for a replacement and I'm now going to rebuild the K301 in my 129.
I see plenty of reasonably priced kits on eBay and the like. Looks like they're made up of Stens parts, which I've had decent luck with in the past. I know I used a kit like this in my K341 but I think I had to go with a Kohler rod as there was no aftermarket alternative at the time. None the less that was a K341 and this is a K301. From the looks of it my only other option is to buy all the part individually from Kohler, which I'm sure some people do but that looks quite expensive. So what's everyone doing? K |

I have been getting my stuff from Pats Small Engine. He offers OEM and aftermarket parts. 2 days is the longest I have had to wait for anything from him. I avoid evil pay at all cost.

Thanks for the heads up on Pats, his OEM stuff seems quite reasonable.

I've been using Pats for 4 or 5 years now. shipping is a flat rate so the more you order the cheaper the freight gets. I have noticed that the aftermarket rebuild kits they mix and match the cheapest parts. last kit I got had a stens piston with Rotary rings and ran into a problem but they did take care of it but they were hard to get ahold of on the phone.

I have rebuilt three Kohlers using kits from NAPA. I am not sure who their supplier is for the kits. I have had good service from them. The one NAPA store near me has an excellent machine shop where I have had two crankshafts turned .010" under and one engine bored oversize.

For my 301 i think i got the basic rebuild kit from pats; piston, rings, gaskets and seals...came out to like 55bucks i believe.(some places will throw in points/cond) ..then i just got an oem rod from local IH dealer for 60$...and that was just because of all the stupid stories i had heard and and said screw it...

I've built engines with the cheap eBay kits and with kohler parts both. I've always left it to the customer as to what they want to use based on what they can afford.
The only problem I've really had with the cheap kits has been with rings. I have gotten kits with two scraper rings and no compression ring. Kits with 10 over scraper and oil rings, but a standard compression ring. So if you do get a low dollar kit, I encourage you to check all the components to make sure they are what they are supposed to be. But is is like with anything these days. The quality of parts has really diminished over the last 10 years or so. I've had issues with engine kits and oil pumps for diesel engines as well. And those were parts form the dealer in boxes with the all the correct logos on them. |

Thanks for all the feed back. I hope to get it apart and measure things up this week. Then I'll see what direction I want to go in.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
