How much has it been used in 4 season's? If it was anything like here then it barely made it out of the shed. If you are sure it hasn't leaked then its probably fine.

Really supposed to have a thin grease in it, not oil. You really should probably at least check the level.

To be safe Jon is right, I've never heard of a gear box that ran better dry... Literally takes minutes to check, better than hours of down time!

I don't have any pictures but when I had mine apart to clean and check out, I determined a good spot to drill and tap a hole to put a 1/4 x 28 grease zerk. A pump or two every season beats the heck out of wondering about it or taking it all apart to take a look.

But the box doesn't take grease either.... unless you are using John Deere corn head grease. (Which is actually the same lubricant IH recommended, just an IH brand.) 1 or 2 pumps of grease isn't even a tablespoon of lube. Not really enough to make a dent in the capacity of the gearbox.

Sure you can. Drain out the oil you put in it though.

OK, so I AM NOT pushing Deere lubricant, but here goes:
People don't seem to want to go to the trouble of mixing up their own lube for the box. I do it that way because I keep wheel bearing grease and gear lube on my shelf, so I just have to mix some up when I need it. You can get lube from CCC but other people have said they want some ridiculous amount for it. (Like I think I heard $30.) Deere corn head grease is the same stuff. It's a 0 grade grease. You can buy it in a grease gun tube, but they may sell it in other packaging. (*Note to ironman below.*) If you purchase it, take your grease gun apart and remove the tube of grease you have in it. Install the corn head grease tube in it, but don't put the handle back on the gun. Aim the tube at the gearbox and release the tube, BUT HOLD ON TO IT!! Let it push out what you need, then pull the rod back. Remove the tube and put it on the shelf. You can cover the end with (Reynolds) plastic wrap from your wifes kitchen drawer. Then you can reinstall your old grease tube.

You can get the grease from Deere, or from here. Not bad on price. If you don't want the Deere lube, then you want to buy grade 0 grease, or do what I do and make your own. Here is a video of the Deere stuff, just so you can see how it keeps the gears lubed. Regular grease will fling away and not flow back to the gears. Again, not pushing the JD stuff, just using it as an example.

I just wanted to point out that if you are using this type of grease then adding some with your gun through the zerk you added would be fine. But if it isn't leaking out, not really necessary to do.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
