I finally got right with YouTube and got the video loaded. As I said in the video description, I should have used more throttle to start it, but it definitely shows how well the gear reduction starter spins the motor over.

I went up to the Cub dealer last week and I have the Hytran and filter now, so I'll see if I can do the rear-end service this weekend. It's supposed to be pretty nice here on Sunday.

Tom,
Thanks for the video and walk around. She sounds/looks good! Those starters do make a huge difference. I'm curious to see what you think of the block/head heater. That's one mod I have not done yet.

Thanks for the video Tom. You did a fantastic job on that one. Looks close to new for being thirty years old. Really wanting a diesel now, yours is extremely nice.

As promised, I opened up the rear diff this weekend. I was pleased to see that there was hardly any 'pudding' at the bottom of the housing - we've all seen much worse - and the Hytran that came out looked and smelled good.

I cleaned out the housing and sprayed it down with brake cleaner. Then the diff cover was cleaned and a new gasket was installed.

Yes, I went back and got the corners clean with a putty knife...

Cleaned, filled, and back together:

I took Todd's advice and dug out the rear bagger mounting plate/bracket that I kept of the 882 I just sold. Todd said it would act to stiffen up the frame, and I like that the hitch mount is independent from the aluminum rear-end housing. It'll take a minute to get used to all of that yellow back there, but I think I'm gonna go with it:

Big yellow rear end!

Everything worked normally after the flush and fill; thankfully there were no suction or priming issues with the transmission. I still have a noticeable seeping of Hytran from between the trans and the rear, so I may be headed for splitsville and a cork gasket replacement.

All in all, this was a very teachable and informative teardown and maintenance campaign. Thanks for all of the kind words related to the tractor and the progress and for the input from everyone on the various mods and what was and was not readily available as far as parts for the Kubota. She should be good to go for another 30 years and I can't wait for mowing season to get here!!

Oh, and I noticed that they took the red tint out of the Hytran - the gallon and quart I bought last weekend were almost clear - looked a lot like synthetic motor oil...

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
