Default 450 Snowblower

I've been on the lookout for a 450 or possibly a 451 snowblower for my 1872. I had talked with a guy in PA about a 451 he had posted for $855. It would have been a 4 hour drive for me and he would only come down to $750 so I decided to pass.

I'm glad I did because a guy 30min from me posted a practically brand new 450. He got it with his 1872 back in 1992 and it's been in storage ever since, he never used it. I managed to pick it up for $390. It's in really great shape so I think I did ok. Of course, pictures...

It turns free. I think the first step is repacking the gears.

Good thing you waited. The 451 is the wrong blower for your machine. Congrats on the "barn find"!

Thanks! Yeah, I'm glad I found the 450 instead. Didn't want to mess with swapping pulleys for a 451. Plus this one is in way better shape than the 451 I was looking at.

Gears in the gearboxes are different. If you had done a pulley swap, I think you would have lost all your torque.

Gear boxes are different because 451 applications had a 6" PTO pulley I thought.

Gear boxes have a different ratio because the PTO pulleys on the tractors are different sizes.

Correct, that's what I meant by 451 applications. The tractors the 451 blower were built for had the 6" PTO pulley.

Yes that is correct, but they used the same pulley on the gear box. That way input torque, and output speed stayed the same.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.

MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
