451 snow blower
.........whatever you want to call it.
I have a 451 I bought used a couple years ago. I mounted it on a 1641 and never used it to move snow. I did spin it up dry. It seemed to be okay but maybe have made some noise. I don't really remember how much or what it sounded like. Anyway, a member here wants to buy it. I can't assure him it's 100% and he lives about 300 miles away so it's not practical for him to bring it back if something MIGHT BE wrong with it. I don't want to sell something that isn't right. Anyway, I advised the potential buyer that the PTO pulley had about a half inch of radial play in it and maybe 3/8" end play in the same shaft. For those of you that have these blowers, is this normal or too much? Otherwise, how can I be sure this thing is in good condition gearbox wise. The rest of the thing appears in very good condition. Any honest input appreciated.

I have my 451 sitting in the shop ready to put on as soon as I'm done with the leaf pick up. I just went out and checked it. I assume when you say PTO pulley you are talking about the pulley on the gearbox of the blower and not the engine PTO pulley. My blower has less than 1/8" end float and no discernible radial movement. This blower is used but it doesn't have a lot of hours on it. I just had the gearbox open and repacked it with grease and things inside showed no wear.

I just picked up a 451 blower yesterday. There is no noticeable play up and down, in or out, turns free and smooth, and it looks as if its been used hard. I didn't think to ask the PO if any work had been done to it. Not the answer you wanted to hear. Sorry.
