I am going to pick up a 1782 next week and I understand it needs a battery. I would like to take a battery with me that fits. I do not want to give Cub Cadet $178. for a battery. Can anyone tell me what size I should purchase at an auto parts store?

A quick Google search of "cub cadet 1782 owner's manual" produced this site:
http://ccmanuals.info/pdf/1782%20Owners%20Manual.pdf Page 42 shows the battery spec; amperage cranking power range. But I would suspect any 12v garden/utility battery at the auto parts store would be able to work. If you cannot find something, don't underestimate the power of a simple Google search.

Thanks SGragg for looking. I don't think the lawn and garden batteries are correct for these diesels. I have the owners manual and it didn't tell me what I wanted to know. I went to the local Cub Cadet dealer today and gave them the part number for the battery as shown in the owners manual (725-3174). I was looking for dimensions since I don't know what the battery box looks like and also CCA requirements. I was told by the owner (in another state) that it was mounted down low in front and required a short battery. All the dealer could tell me is it is 500 CCA and they would have to order me a battery to get the other info. (Their cost is $169) I have a Group 24 Marine battery which is 625 CCA. I will just take that with me to get it loaded on my trailer and worry about sizes later.

How embarrassing! Your post didn't say diesel, but should have investigated further before offering advice. Lesson learned.

Nothing to be embarrassed about! I appreciated your trying to help.
In what part of Mo. do you live? I grew up in North Central part of the state-Fayette. We just sold our property up there 2 weeks ago and I will be bringing the 1782 back from up there next week. By the way-someone else was trying to find out what battery fit the 1782 a couple of weeks ago. I hope these responses help him. I am going to pick up a 26R tomorrow.

Cub Cadet is a premium line of outdoor power equipment, established in 1961 as part of International Harvester. During the 1960s, IH initiated an entirely new line of lawn and garden equipment aimed at the owners rural homes with large yards and private gardens. There were a wide variety of Cub Cadet branded and after-market attachments available; including mowers, blades, snow blowers, front loaders, plows, carts, etc. Cub Cadet advertising at that time harped on their thorough testing by "boys - acknowledged by many as the world's worst destructive force!". Cub Cadets became known for their dependability and rugged construction.
MTD Products, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio purchased the Cub Cadet brand from International Harvester in 1981. Cub Cadet was held as a wholly owned subsidiary for many years following this acquisition, which allowed them to operate independently. Recently, MTD has taken a more aggressive role and integrated Cub Cadet into its other lines of power equipment.
