Run into something like that on a toro self propelled hand mower,tejunkski power TNT 120.
bought it in maybe '72 for Mom, has a 12V starter on a 20" mower.
Mom was around then, and she liked the key starter, as she could not pull the rope.
Long story short it liked to eat nylon starter pinions.
So I found a metal pinion. no more pinion problem till it knocked a tooth off the aluminum flywheel/ ring gear.
so much for that idea.
That old mower is still in the barn, like a lot of stuff I need to get rid of.
