Years ago in another house, I told my landscaper buddy I wanted the prettiest lawn in town. He told me to get my wallet out and he worked a couple times a week on the grass. Well, it got so bad I had to hire his crew to mow. I swear it grew 2 inches a day. But he taught me the art of laying out lines. Go one way right down the middle and come right back the other way. He explained that the grass actually lies over when you make a cut. The when you do the reverse, that's where the checkered look comes from. That year I did have the best looking yard in town, but it cost me a fortune. Now I do it all myself, but not so much fertilizer.
