Had the same issue with the engine that came out of that 1641 I bought from Earl AKA DaDuke. I just pressed it back it, cleaned the crud off the valves and replaced the bent pushrods. The engine is now in my pressure washer. So far it's been running fine. Think it pushed the guide up because it got hot. Engine had so many things screwed up on it I'm surprised it even ran. I'm not suggesting that you do what I did on one that will be worked hard.

Is your 16 Vanguard still running on that shade tree fix?
I picked up a low hour 1641 a couple days ago and it had a guide that had slipped up and bent the pushrod. I hammered it back down and straigtened the pushrod and it is now going up and down like it's supposed to.
I haven't gotten the engine hot yet so I don't know if it will last or not. Didn't figure I had much to lose.
I just wondered how yours came out?
