So I found a metal pinion. no more pinion problem till it knocked a tooth off the aluminum flywheel/ ring gear.
so much for that idea.

If you use the steel pinion on an aluminum ring gear, you'll shell the teeth off the ring gear.
I believe the steel pinions and the plastic pinions have a different pitch between the teeth as well.
