Default Gear Shift Repair - Part 1

Repairing The Shifter Part 1

My Cub Cadet 70 has a problem with the gear shifter.

Gear Shifter should be facing towards the front of the tractor-not sideways.

1. Transmission has to be remove from the tractor to get to shifter. I grab the shifter handle and this is what happen.

Notice the shifter handle laying on the transmission.

2. There are 8 bolts that hold the shifter on the transmission. Remove the bolts and be careful not to allow any dirt in the open transmission.

3. Remove the cover and clean as needed.

4. Mount shifter in a vise.

5. Take a Vise Grips and clamp onto gear shift lever guide leaving a space for a screwdriver as shown in the picture.

6. Take Your Screwdriver and pry against the vise grips. this will move gear shift guide away from gear shift housing. Rotate housing 180 degrees and pry the same way as you did on the other side.

You will have to repeat this process several times until gear shift guide separates from the gear shift housing.

7. The spring, retainers and gear shift lever cover needs removed from the gear shift lever. Compress the spring and attach a vise grip as shown in the picture.

The pin in the gear shift lever need to be removed. I put the gear shift lever in my vise and used a hammer and a punch to drive pin out of the gear shift lever.

This what your gear shift lever will look like after the pin is removed.

The gear shift lever and cup should be one piece.

Here are the tools I used to take shifter apart. You will need a vise to hold gear shifter.

Do I repair or replace the shifter I have?
Replacement shifter will cost some $$$ and you could get one that will need repaired in the near future.

Welding is the only way to repair the broken shifter. I will repair the shifter I have.
