1215 - Needs brake work and general tune-up

Hi All,

My grandfather passed a couple of years ago and had a 1215 at the house he was staying. The people that owned the place asked me if I wanted it so I picked it up this past weekend.

All in all, seems in okay shape. The deck will likely need some patching, and I assume I'll have to pump the fuel out and clean the carburetor out. It ran choked for maybe 5 seconds and I haven't been able to get it to kick since so I'm guessing it gunked up real quick with the old fuel.

Anyway, I expect I'll be okay getting the engine going myself. However, I was told that the brakes haven't worked on it for a while.

does anyone have any diagrams or literature that can help diagnose what I need to do? I'm not even sure what type of brake system this thing has!

Also, anyone have any anecdotal information to share about this tractor? Is this a "good" model, if there is such a thing?

Thanks ahead of time.
Vincent.

I just saw the "stickied" post on submitting questions.

I will update with model numbers after work!

First, welcome to OCC...... :Welcome2:

You can find any/all parts you want to look up by going here.... Cub Cadet Parts Lookup Site.

Type in your 1215 in the second box down and a menu will come up. Please note, there are two different Diagrams based upon the Chassis Serial Number. You will need to know that.

Select the right diagram and you are in business.

Thanks for the info!

Sorry for the delay, finally got some nice weather to pull the tractor back out.

The carburetor well and float are super rusted inside. ordered a new well, float, fuel pump, and fuel filter. Hoping I can just blast the jets clean with some cleaner and a compressor. Really hope I can get this thing going this week! Then I'll worry about the brakes. :)

Well.. I tried blowing the carb out with cleaner and an air compressor and installed my new carb parts.

Still won't start. I'm assuming I have to learn to rebuild a carburetor to get this thing running, but hoping I can get clued in to where my problem might be.

It's odd - I can get it to start with the air cleaner off - Any amount of choke kills the engine, and even holding the cleaner over the intake (not seating it, just positioning it) will kill the engine. It only sort of runs on full throttle for a few minutes and it only BARELY runs. I see lots of posts where people can only get their engine to run if it's fully choked, but I seem to be having the opposite problem.

Any ideas where to start? Or do I just need to fully disassemble the carb and try to get it back together right?

Thanks

there isn't that many parts when taking one a part

what I do is take carb apart and then blow through every little hole with carb spray and use a fine piece of wire (bread tie with the plastic/paper peeled off it) and run the fine wire through all the little holes then more carb spray then another trip with the wire and repeat as many times as it takes to get it clean.

check the float adjustment

put it back on and go

also check to make sure you've got good fuel in the tank and that it is getting to the carb

there is about a gazillion carb cleaning videos on youtube.com

I'm not sure it those are your exact carb but should be close

looks like brand new china carbs on eBay for about $50
I've bought a couple china carbs for other engines and had good luck with them
