1450 Stalling Out
 
My Cub is done for the season but I have noticed a recent problem, when cutting for around 30 minutes the motor sputters for a sec and then just cuts off you can hear the piston move up and down and then a slight backfire. When I let it rest it runs just fine for another 30 mins. Does it have a temp sensor or could it be overheating? The fan on the drveshaft is on and I have the side pannels on, or is it time to retire it?

Check the coil. It's getting hot and losing spark. :) My 1250 did that.

You might want to check the fuel flow to the carb.
and/or possibly water in the gas. it is very easy to do, and will cause it to act that way.

Thanks guys for all your advice! I will check the gas flow and is it easy to replace the coil? Or should I have a mechanic do it? OOhhhh also is it expensive?

An OEM Kohler Coil runs around 45 bucks. I hear NAPA has an after market coil for around 20. Just pop the right side panel off and there it is. Very easy to change.

You might check the point setting also, before you spring for a coil.

Exhuast valve is sticking when the engine gets hot. Pull the head and exhaust valve, clean the stem with a brass brush mounted in a drill or drill press. You also HAVE to buy a valve guide reamer and clean the carbon in the guide. I found mine on Ebay! My 1450 and 1650 did the exact same thing. this fixed both!

I had a similar problem with my 1650. Turned out to be that the float wasn't dropping enough and when the engine burned about 1/2 tank of gas, it would quit. I let it cool a while and it would run again. Replaced the coil... same thing.:bash2:

I checked the fuel valve for rust/crud, clean as a whistle!!:angry:

I finally removed the carb to check for a blocked passage somewhere and I noticed (carb was still hot) that the float wasn't dropping down far enough. So when the carb got hot, the float needle magically closed SHUT!!!:bigthink:

Some OLD WISE man once that "Ve get too soon old and too late schmart". I bent the tang away from the seat a little more and the problem disappeared.
Perhaps someone else can learn from this experience...:beerchug:
