Family Owned 70: Project Uncle Dick

This topic was started in the old Only Cub Cadets site. The 70 came home April of 2008. I've been working on the 70 as time allowed. I have the time now because my work requires me to take a week off without pay. This will a good week to work on the 70.

My Wife's Uncle Dick purchased a 70 new in March of 1965. He mainly used the 70 in a 10 acre straw berry-blue berry farm. Uncle Dick past away 16 years ago and the tractor wasn't used very much since then. I had a chance to buy Uncle Dick's 70.

It came home last Saturday.

70 has a 3 point, sleeve hitch adapter and a Brinly cultivator.

70 will be restored back to orginal.

Merk, thanks for posting the photos. That's awesome that it was used on a 10 acre farm. I was just explaining earlier today to my 13 year old that these tractors aren't "lawn mowers" and your post just gave me more fuel for the discussion!! Good luck with the resto and have a great evening!!:beerchug:

Merk,
I was thinking about this just the other day and wondering how you were doing on it. Can't wait to see more pictures as your work continues.

ihnick 08-03-2009 10:31 PM

hey merk. this is a off topic question but i'm looking for brinly attachments and possibly a hitch. do you got any for sale?

ACecil 08-03-2009 10:41 PM

I look forward, to your progress also Dale. :beerchug:

I have no Brinly stuff for sale right now.

This was an interresting last 6-8 months. Between work, wrecking my Suburban, trailer and Cubs this spring and some family health problems I haven't been able to work much on the 70.
Working on the 70 is going to be good therapy for me.

Merk 08-03-2009 11:43 PM

I like to take plenty of pictures when I take a Cub apart. It helps when I put it back together.

Nice!! You got lucky keeping it in the family and with all the original documents. We have my grandfathers 128 that we are restoring. It is a slow go.

RPalmer 08-04-2009 06:43 AM

Merk,
Great tractor and thanks for the photos. They will help me get my wiring routed and secured properly. Of course getting the clips will be another mission.

RoninKS 08-04-2009 11:53 AM

Man O'man,... I'd love to have that 3pt. and cultivator on my 100. :Cry1:

Nice looking project, thanks for the pictures. :beerchug:

The grill was pushed back some. Someone drilled a second set of holes so the hood could clear the steering wheel.

Here is how the hood looks primed. There is only 1 hole on each side now.

papaglide 08-06-2009 10:56 PM

Awesome job. Wish that I had the know how to do that to my 127..

Merk 08-06-2009 11:27 PM

Brake is not working right on the 70 and the tractor is hard to push. I desided to drain the oil in the rear end.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0Dick/UD47.jpg
This doesn't look good.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0Dick/UD48.jpg
There was an half inch of junk inside the rear end.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0Dick/UD51.jpg
Little rust on the gear shifter base
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0Dick/UD49.jpg
Now to repair the brake.
The brake linkage needs to be removed first.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0Dick/UD60.jpg
Remove the front cover.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0Dick/UD55.jpg
Remove big reduction gear. I used a impact to remove the center bolt.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0Dick/UD56.jpg
Remove the 4 bolts holding the reduction housing on. Housing pulls straight off. The brake disc will stay in the housing.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0Dick/UD57.jpg
Housing/disc off the rear end/trans.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0Dick/UD59.jpg
Clean up time.

RPalmer 08-06-2009 11:40 PM

Thanks for the pictures. I really like the pop bottle idea.

Merk 08-06-2009 11:44 PM

The o-ring on this piston was the reason the brake was hanging up.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0Dick/UD63.jpg
I will clean the bore the piston fits in.
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0Dick/UD62.jpg
The new o-ring is greased so it makes it easier to install the o0ring/piston assembly.
Trans/rear end clean.

New Gaskets for trans:
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0Dick/UD69.jpg
Service manual is needed.....some of the bolts need torque.
Trans going back together:
http://i152.photobucket.com/albums/s...0Dick/UD70.jpg
I like to paint the front and rear covers.

Merk, great job!! Thanks for posting the pics. I learn much more from seeing what you guys are talking about than trying to visualize it in my head. Thanks again and have a great day!!!:beerchug:

RPalmer 08-07-2009 09:13 AM

Merk,

This is really helpful and for me timely. I've been working on a 100. And like my other tractors there are the signs of a few hands that did work on it. Some of which just isn't right. I'm not talking correct police correct, but common sense right. And these pictures go a long way in showing what I need to know.

One of my concerns with this 100 is that it had no brake rod on it. Sure they are NLA but they can be had. I got one. But I'm hoping against hope that it was not removed because the brake was stuck. If I do need to fix a bad brake you can bet I'll be downloading this page to make sure all goes as it should. Thanks for the great contribution.

Merk 08-07-2009 09:17 AM

I had to repair a few spots on the frame and tower.

Glad to see my post(s) are helping a few to work on their Cubs. Changing the O-ring is easy to do. This give the owner a chance to see how everything looks inside and do some much needed maintance.

Looks awesome Dale! I look forward, to seeing the finished tractor.

Thanks for the comments on the paint.
I'm not worried about the paint on cooling fins. The paint is not hi temp paint. It will burn off if it gets hot enough. My 100 has paint on cooling fins. Haven't burned it off.....yet. The was 2 years ago. I didn't plan to paint part of bearing plate...pain to tape off. I don't paint heads.

67hydro 08-10-2009 10:44 PM

Thanks Merk,
I didnt even notice you painted the SMALL section of the rear of the bearing plate!!!!!!
I was just mentioning I "new" not to paint it!!LOLnot a put down

The yellow didn't look the same on a few parts. 70 was given a final coat of paint as it looks in the above pictures. The color looks uniform now.

It's looking nice. You make it look so easy. And it's not. The sign of someone who knows how and is good at it.
