Advice on k241 for stock class.
 

I dont hear much about the 10hp. Everybody says use a301,but you use what you got and try to bend the rules to your advantage.Has anyone had much luck with the small motor? I will be running a Cub 106.

Funny you should ask! I'm taking my model 72 to a backyard pull this Saturday, and I can't wait! First time with this tractor, and my second time ever at pulling. Last time I had my model 71 that went 84' in the 850# class pulling a real nice new transfer sled. I was not competing, so the officials let me keep my rear wheel weights on.

So, I'm going to try a pull on grass with my model 72 that has a k241 in it. This tractor runs so good it starts before I can let go of the key, so I'm guessing I'm going to run out of traction. Just doing it for fun, before I get it ready to fight the snow season. Now if the pull were on pavement, well that would be more of a story?

you usually want to use the biggest engine you can , horsepower and cubic inchs generally rule, that said you need the whole package, I've seen guys that can't get down the track on their own. gearing, balance , tires and being able to read a track goes a long way.

What a blast today! Little bit of backyard pulling! There were 8 garden tractors. Here are the top four winners:

1) IHCC 128
2) Simplicity 7112
3) IHCC 72 (me)
4) Wheel Horse C-161 Automatic

I pulled strong all after noon, and appeared to be unstoppable. The 72's K241 was a beast, and was the smallest engine in the group! The Mid West Super Cub clutch package I have in the 72 never slipped, and the engine never backed down!

I took the sled to "full pull" my first four pulls. Then, my 5th pull I came in second, and my 6th pull I came in third as the finish line area of the dirt track was tore up, and loaded up my turf tires. Third place was the end result for me in the competition.

On another note, I was surprised at how well the two hydrostatic drive garden tractors actually did! Any how, this light the fire to get my model 86 with K301 cleaned up and put together, but will honor the IH Cub Cadet colors and badges!

Is the engine in your 72 the one I did?

Yes! I would have to say my k241 is surprisingly strong. I use my 72 for snow plowing, so this was a first and last time pull for my tractor. This was the first time I ever worked the tractor since rebuild, I have always pampered my 72. Not to cry too much, but the 128 that won our pulling competition has tractor AG rear tires, and the Simplicity 7172 pulled about 1.5" further in the 5th round. The 6th pull, we had added around 110# of weight, and yet I took the sled as far as I did in the 5th pull only to be loaded up again at the end of the track where the Simplicity 7112 were not pulling anywhere as far as they did back in the 5th. We were pulling for fun in the 6th pull, so this pull really did not count. Kind of confusing looking at the stats.

you want to build a shifter lock or bungee it into gear before you break something. not uncommon to chip a tooth when they pop out under load
