Elec PTO Bearing Repair

My brother has a MTD cc that the pto bearings went out of. Told him to ship me the pto and I would rebuild it. I don't remember his model, (which is funny, cause I just sold it to him) but it really doesn't matter. Almost all electric PTO clutches are made similar. Hope this helps someone!

Here is where they roll the metal down to hold one bearing in. You need to take a die grinder and grind these "tabs" off.

The inner bearing had come completely apart, so I put the balls back in and tack welded them in place to I could press the old bearing out.

Here are the "tabs" on the other bearing. One bearing only had 3, the other had.... um, lots.

Not a great pic, but it shows the rasp bit I used and how the tabs look after grinding.

All clean and disassembled. Old bearings laying out.

One new bearing pressed in place.

Now, take a sharp center punch and make new tabs to help hold the bearing in place. I don't always do this, and have never had a bearing come out. But, easy to do as added safety.

The other bearing, with new tabs.

Reassembled and ready to install!

A new PTO is about $300. I got the bearings for about $25 a piece...... GOOD SAVINGS!!
