Bad spark on a 1641

I just changed the stator on my 1641 because the battery was going dead when mowing. I was thinking the stator was not putting out enough to run the PTO clutch to the belt. pulled it all apart, cleaned the flywheel put it back together and it started fine. After just a few min. it quit and when trying to start it, it was backfiring radically. Pulled a plug and had a spark that was firing weak and too fast. Both plugs are doing it. I can't see both coils going bad. Any ideas before I pull it all back apart. Thanks Rick It was the diodes, a cheep fix they were both burnt. Thanks

Sounds like you put something together wrong. Better take it all back apart.

How did you determine that it had a bad stator? Just guess? Or did you check it before you replaced it?

Check the diode between the coils. I had kinda the same issue on a 3165 and it ended up being a shorted diode causing all kinds of spark issues.

I ended up going to RadioShack and getting new ones. Their part number is 276-1114.

Thanks

I had a stator so when I took it apart to look things over I just put it in. The old one looked good. I will check the diode. I also just found what looks like a fusable link 2" long in a red wire on the engine side of the connector going up to the lights with a broke pin on one end (says RP606 on it). Can't find it on the wiring diagram I just got. It was shoved together but maybe not a good contact. Going to tear it apart today. Thanks Guys
