Repairing The Shifter Part 2
https://s25.postimg.cc/5tljbmrgf/s18.jpg You may need to file, grind, reform using a ball peen hammer, or a combination to get the shifter cup to fit the gear shifter lever. It should fit like the picture shows. A crack was notice while getting the ball cup ready to weld. Crack is above my finger: https://s25.postimg.cc/l8p5shu9r/s19.jpg Including this one the last 2 shifters were crack in this area. It is above the slot in the ball cup. Double check this area when you are repairing your shifter. After all the prep work is done it is you are ready to weld. To help prevent shifter cup from warping weld in short bursts. Weld for a short time (5-10 seconds) on one side and the same amount of time on the opposite side until you completely weld around the shifter lever. https://s25.postimg.cc/hwquz72in/s21.jpg Turned shifter upside down and weld underside of the shifter as you did on the top side. https://s25.postimg.cc/rvbtloby7/s23.jpg After welding complete you will need to to smooth welds. The tools I used were a 4 1/2 grinder and a Dremel with small grinding wheel to get in the tight areas. When you are done it should look something like this: https://s25.postimg.cc/gbg6l4hof/s26.jpg https://s25.postimg.cc/p7qyp28an/s25.jpg One area that needs close attention is the slot in the ball cup. Make sure it is enough room for the pin to be able to move freely. https://s25.postimg.cc/wihvnfzb3/s24.jpg Submitted by: Dale Merkle |
